Week 11
For this week we will go over ELEMENT SIX.
Persuasive Performance
What does Gitomer mean: Vocal Variety
Vocal variety covers the 4 P’s:
- Power (or volume)
- Pitch - music emotions
- Pace - Speed up to heighten the emotion, Slow down when delivering key phrases
- Pauses -
- Short pauses signal the end of a clause or sentence.
- Longer pauses signal the transition between major points or stories.
- The preceding pause signals to the audience that you are about to say something important.
- The following pause gives the audience time to reflect on what you just said and internalize it.
*
- Pauses can also be used to enhance audience
interaction
- Jobs opens with a compliment for the
audience: “I am honored to be with
you today for your commencement from one of the
finest universities in the world.” He
follows that by showing humility
in admitting that he never graduated college. In
just a few sentences, he has made the audience
feel very good about themselves, and
increased their receptiveness to his message.
Use a gradual build in pitch as you take us to your main
point.
Try an open rising inflection on a question to wake us
up!
Use changes of pace to give different weight to what you
are saying.
Perhaps quieter rather than louder at key passages.
Simple rule : "new pitch, new thought"
Speech Critique - I Have a Dream - Martin Luther
King Jr.
Much of the greatness of this speech is tied to its
historical context, a topic which goes beyond the scope
of this article.
Instead, I’ll focus on five key lessons in
speechwriting that we can extract from Martin Luther
King’s most famous speech.
- Emphasis phrases by repeating at the beginning
of sentences
- Repeat key “theme” words throughout your speech
- Utilize appropriate quotations or allusions
- Use specific examples to “ground” your arguments
- Use metaphors to highlight contrasting concepts
Humorous Opening Segment
The first six minutes of this
sixteen-minute speech are devoted to
establishing rapport with the audience. Gore
does this with several humorous observations and
stories.
